MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN SOMEONE’S LIFE – MAYBE EVEN YOUR OWN!
TUTOR TRAINING OPPORTUNITY
Did you know that more than 2.6 million adults in Florida – or 20 percent of those 16 and older – lack even the most basic reading skills, according to estimates by the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES)? In fact, it is estimated nearly one quarter of adults in the U.S. are “functionally illiterate”.
For over 31 years, The Literacy Council of Sarasota has been able to give Sarasota area learners a chance to start again by helping low-literate adults, and adult students who wish to learn English as a second language, acquire free tutoring and learning materials essential to achieving greater self-sufficiency.
The Council has a wait list of students! We need tutors!
If you are over 18 and would like to learn more about this opportunity to give back to your community, please call us at 955-0421, or email info@sarasotaliteracy.org.
You can make a difference in someone’s life by giving the gift of literacy. Each year, thousands of Floridians give back to their communities by tutoring an adult. Tutors and other program volunteers are an important part of the literacy field in Sarasota. This section will provide you with information on how to get started and what you might expect when becoming a literacy tutor.
HOW DO I BECOME A TUTOR?
1) Complete a volunteer/tutor application.
2) Attend the New Volunteer Orientation or arrange to meet at the LCS office.
3) Attend a volunteer interview.
4) Complete three tutor training workshops.
Tutor training, materials and support are provided by LCS. Tutor-student pairs generally meet at least once weekly and use materials provided by the Council. Pairs meet in a library, community center, or other public place that is convenient to both of them. Flexible days and times are available.
