Literacy Matters Luncheon
Guest speaker: Rob Shindler
Rob Shindler is not your traditional author. He’s just a dad who wrote a story about his little boy and the adult strangers they fell in love with along the way. Today, he continues his work at Literacy Chicago, but has also been working with female inmates at the Cook County Jail for over four years transforming these wonderful women into members of his “Army of Tutors.” Mr. Shindler has spoken about adult illiteracy around the country and believes that in just one hour a week, we can change the course of a stranger’s life.
In his heartwarming book, Hot Dogs and Hamburgers—Unlocking Life’s Potential by Inspiring Literacy at Any Age, Rob Shindler tells how he offered his time, unflagging energy and unconventional teaching techniques to help a boy with serious learning differences and adults suffering from low literacy levels. As a father who wanted to help his son with his reading deficiencies, Rob discovered the way to achieving that goal was through volunteering at Literacy Chicago.
